Artist's Statement

I specialize in the creation of public sculpture for churches, religious organizations and secular institutions. I create much of my art with bronze and aluminum castings of human subjects. My work ranges from portraiture and relief panels, to heroic scale full-figure works. A developing passion of mine is for art in fabricated sheet metals on a large scale. My work often manifests itself as a combination of realism and abstraction. I see value in both the traditional and contemporary modes of expression, and I like to think of my sculpture as a bridge between them. Always, I take inspiration from nature for my art. Much of my body of work has been custom commissioned. I have found that working with others in pursuit of common dreams has opened undreamed of creative possibilities. Commissions are journeys of discovery. They are like a trellis on which the vine of creative freedom can blossom. These cooperative efforts have forced me to grow, becoming a mature artist, and a better person.

Whatever material, style or subject I choose, I believe that I have a duty to use my work to bring people together. Art can be haunting, compelling, uncompromising, and unsentimental, while still maintaining a spirit of charity. Truth without charity is cruelty.

It has been my experience that my work reaches most deeply into people's hearts when they feel that their human dignity has been respected and uplifted. Artists must aspire to be servants and ambassadors to those around them. Art has a unique and all too often ignored power to heal resentments and promote universal brotherhood. The power of kindness as an instrument of personal and social change is truly remarkable. The only barriers that I am interested in breaking are those that exist inside the human soul. In its essence, my art is a relationship cemented between people. Any sculpture I create is only a bridge for these people to cross. I am at my best when reaching beyond myself to serve those around me, and use what I have been given to promote reconciliation in the service of God and our Nation.
